Zinc is a white, soft, shiny metal that is easily soluble in acidic solutions. If acidic foods are prepared or stored in open barrels or other galvanized containers, zinc dissolves into food in the form of toxic organic acids.
If people eat foods containing toxic organic salts in large quantities, there is a risk of poisoning. Therefore, when using galvanized containers, including paint buckets, do not use them for foods such as acidic dishes, fruit juices, and milk.
